There are several features about memory including:. Buffering rates. Buffer sizes. Refresh rates These traits differe even within a single-vendor's line of the same 'basic speed'. One example is Kingston's 'value line' and 'Mac-compatible line'. 'Value line' works badly in Macs, according to experiences within this forum.

Here's the skinny on the best RAM for Macs! RAM (Random Access Memory) or computer memory does the work for you while you’re actively using programs or apps. While you are working with Photoshop, for example, you need sufficient computer RAM to run the program. Working out how much RAM you need for a Mac before you buy a new machine is tricky. Better memory management, faster storage for caching files that can’t be stored in RAM, and blazing fast graphics processing units (GPUs) with their own dedicated RAM mean that the load on your main.
Macs are picky, and putting cheap memory in can result in random slowing, random shutdowns, forced reseating or memory every couple of weeks. You can choose the risk for $10, but I chose the additional $20 to get the 'mac-compatible guaranteed' product. Many swear by Crucial instead of OWC, so if Crucial matched that to your system, buy it. As to 8 vs 16. Apple first said 8 is max.
But many put their systems at risk to try the 16 GB kits a couple of years ago when the memory was $3000 and the Macs were still $1800 (you do the 'return on investment' for that). Now it is accepted that 16 GB will work, even if Apple says 'no', but Apple really is just 'not confirming 16' more than denying. The only problem with 16 GB is that OWC still charges $500 for 16 GB, which is far beyond the 'scaled price' of $55 for 8 GB. I will wait until it is cheaper.
My two cents; RAM is RAM is RAM. If it meets the specifications and works, that is the best RAM. With that said, if it should fail, a vendor that backs thier product is desirable. OWC is one of those. Regarding installing 16 GB of RAM, ask yourself which applications really need it. Turn on your Activity Monitor from time to time, and it will be very seldom that you find your using 100% of 8GB.
Great for bragging rights, but minimal value in the real world. (If you want to do computer modeling of atomic bomb explosions, then get it!) Ciao. Apple Footer. Whats up all, im looking at upgrading my g5's (dual 1.8 ) memory. Im wanting just some general advice, so can u all tell me what memory you've all used in your g5's, which brands worked fine, which brands were glitchy and caused crashes and stuff, u know those sort of things. Was thinking about getting crucial balistix or maybe ocx memory, any out there used these at all, and if so to what success?
And one last thing, ddr is a industry standard, so even if ddr memory is branded as being for pcs, it should also be compatable in a mac right???? (that is if the speed and number of pins and stuff is matched correctly) thanks for your time, your help will be much appreciated. posted via. please report abuse to. Click to expand.I've had very good luck with memory from crucial.com and from ramjet.com. Both offer competitive prices, and a quality product. I had a 512MB module in my G4 iMac start to fail after about two years (started acting as a 256MB module), and Ramjet did a little bit of troubleshooting over the phone to make sure it wasn't the Mac.
He said it was unusual for a module to fail that long after installation (he's right), but then happily replaced the module. The replacement has had no problems.
